Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
