The Unseen Emotional Toll Following the Storm: The Legacy of Mental Anguish Across Jamaica.

When Hurricane Melissa made landfall on Jamaica on 28 October with winds of 185mph, it left behind a scene of widespread ruin. Residences, healthcare centers, and critical infrastructure were severely compromised, resulting in 32 deaths and affecting an approximate 1.5 million. For therapist Toni-Jan Ifill, it was instantly apparent that the material damage would be paired with profound and persistent emotional wounds.

“Simple things can trigger them,” Ifill explains. “A patient spoke of a trolley we often move through the halls, whose noise reminded her of breaking wood and the fierce gales. She now refuses to hearing that auditory reminder.”

Weeks after the hurricane, which also affected neighboring Cuba, flashbacks of the frightening storm continue to affect some staff at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. The mere sound of rain can now prompt stress reactions among those who lived through it.

The Unseen Cost Beyond Financial Losses

This disaster resulted in a substantial financial package valued at billions of dollars over three years and an extra disbursement of $150m from a groundbreaking catastrophe bond. Yet, experts warn this economic assistance cannot cover the psychological cost: widespread trauma—especially among those who had been recovering from Hurricane Beryl in 2024.

Whereas most attention centers on restoring buildings, research over the last several years demonstrate that the risk of severe anxiety disorders grows substantially after hurricanes and forced relocation. Experts are now urging the integration of psychosocial services into national recovery strategies across the region.

Layered Struggles: Insecurity and Psychological Well-being

Academics stress how prolonged homelessness, destroyed jobs, and inadequate services exacerbate psychological vulnerabilities. A recent regional study identified a heightened danger of anxiety, depression, and PTSD after natural disasters. Additional analysis found similar psychological turmoil among people who survived other hurricanes.

Dr. Eamin Heanoy, a researcher who has examined disaster survivors in multiple countries, notes that survivors often encounter a trio of emotional obstacles: PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, a lecturer in geography and disaster risk management, echoes this view. She observes that while individuals can be strong, as the frequency of disasters increases, mental health is becoming an major issue—although detailed prevalence surveys is still lacking.

The researchers found that female survivors showed more severe emotional impact than male counterparts. “It indicates that women are more susceptible than males during these events,” Smith explains.

The Long Road to Psychological Repair

Dr. Heanoy notes that while some short-term recovery in well-being can happen within a year of the event, long-term outcomes remain uncertain. The degree to which survivors recover depends heavily on the specific triggers and the resources accessible.

The experts observe that the destruction of property and possessions can magnify the emotional challenge to rebuild. Smith calls housing loss “one of the primary stressors,” notably when insurance or savings are lacking. “Reconstruction comes with its own emotional tax,” she says.

Ifill sees the parallel situation among her those seeking help: “Those who had previous psychological issues have found it’s significantly worse in this short period of time.”

Beyond the psychological toll, tangible challenges remain. The hurricane severely damaged vital water infrastructure, slowing the reliable supply of clean water. Financial aid, while helpful, are insufficient to fix the systemic weaknesses exposed by the storm.

Social Cohesion as a Critical Foundation

A key finding is that physical reconstruction by itself does not address the deep sorrow caused by life-altering injuries. Studies consistently finds that survivors often find social networks to be more responsive than government assistance.

“The government’s role is crucial,” Smith acknowledges. “If it fails to materialize, or when it is inefficient, local people provide mutual aid.”

Ifill also highlights the value of community solidarity in navigating hardship. She recalls being “struck by the resilient spirit” among resilient populations. “Everything is destroyed, right? But if a community has a positive outlook, they make jokes about the storm.”

Ifill also commends steps to promote mental health awareness after the disaster but warns about the dangers of constant exposure to traumatic media. “I recommended reducing screen time, following official updates, and using messaging apps to maintain social support.”

An Increasing Regional Priority

Over the past decade, psychosocial care has garnered greater attention from international agencies due to the escalating climate emergency. The growing regularity of climate disasters has led to the development of guidelines for trauma support.

Regional institutions have developed practical guides to help field workers in offering psychological care in the wake of catastrophes. These projects aim to foster psychological fortitude by building capacity, reducing shame, and promoting the seeking of professional help.

Economic support are also underlined as key for preserving mental health. A farmer from another Caribbean nation, who lost all his crops in a previous flood, stresses the despair that arises when promised compensation never arrives. “Officials visited... But up to this day, we did not receive any payment,” he states.

An Appeal for Holistic Healing

Analysts note that the Caribbean region is responsible for a very small fraction of planetary pollution yet bears extreme climate impacts. A timely and comprehensive reconstruction is deemed critical to avoid prolonged suffering.
