In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
