Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
