The buzz around The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
