'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Galbraith resumes clash with Manchester City.

Ethan Galbraith breaks into a smile as he recalls the dramatic dying seconds of his team's remarkable turnaround triumph against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup. The encounter culminated with Galbraith briefly donning a spectator's eyewear after the pitch-side pile-on.

With the clock ticking into the 97th minute, Galbraith struck the post with a long-range strike from 25 yards, and the defender immediately converted the rebound before sprinting toward the home end to revel in the moment, with fans congregating around the players.

Stunning Reversal

This completed an unbelievable recovery given Swansea had been behind 2-0 midway through the final 45 minutes. In the delirium, there was some collateral damage. He shared, "There was a fan shouting out and we were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we noticed the glasses. It was a funny incident putting them on. We are on the pitch as footballers but we're humans, too, so to have a laugh with the fans is always good."

Pep Guardiola Test

The victory secured a fourth-round fixture at home against the Premier League champions on Wednesday, a club Galbraith came close against at the comparable phase of the FA Cup with the London side in February. Galbraith had a prime vantage point when his former team took the lead in spectacular fashion, with the attacker's first-time shot from about long distance going in via the bar and the Stefan Ortega. It feels criminal that it was recorded as an own goal.

"You would have hoped they would've given it to him for attempting the shot from that range," says Galbraith, who began the game centrally before moving to right wing-back after they changed formation. That meant competing with City's winger, with whom he exchanged jerseys, and the attacker was among the opposition who paid tribute to the way the underdogs played positively.

Opponent's Class

"Physically they are outstanding but even the basics and simple things, they can just execute repeatedly," the midfielder notes. "It feels like they complete every delivery and they understand how to dictate and take the sting out of a game. You can think you're all right and then abruptly they will just fizz a pass past your midfield without you even seeing. You have to be focused every second of the game. It demands a strong mentality and focus just to stay in the game."

Swansea Move

Swansea pushed to sign Galbraith in January and beat off competition to sign him in the summer in a seven-figure transfer. He made a name as a fans' favourite across multiple campaigns at his former club and has rapidly replicated that in his new home. At his previous team he joined forces once more with his former manager, who four years ago gave Galbraith his debut prolonged spell in first-team action on loan at a League One side from United. Then came a spell at fourth-tier the Manchester club, before he permanently left Manchester United.

Learning Curve

"I was perhaps a slightly green going into men's football. I think numerous professionals would say under-23s football is entirely separate. Sometimes it appears the ball is moved without much intensity. There are limited tackles or duels. Once you start playing professional matches you have to adjust fast."

Country Call-ups

He has shown that development for club and country, performing well for the Green and White Army, who remain in contention for the World Cup next summer via the qualifying rounds and for whom he has been selected in the past five games, including both legs encounters against the German national team. The ex-coach, Galbraith's previous international manager, paid him the highest praise, saying he was Northern Ireland's "midfield general" given how he handles the football and his knack for a killer pass.

Early Days

This marks a remarkable path for the youngster from the neighborhood in Glengormley, just outside Northern Ireland's main city, who used to see his dad, the elder Galbraith, also a central player, play for Ballyclare Comrades.

Manchester United Experience

Galbraith's only game for United came in the away trip in 2019, a Europa League trip to the Kazakh capital, where they competed on an plastic turf and the arena covering was sealed owing to the weather of -15C. "It was a lengthy journey and it was cold out there," he says, grinning. "The days leading up, myself and quite a few of the young lads trained together, so that assisted our preparation. Just to travel with the first team and earn some playing time at the end was unbelievable."

Moving On

How difficult was it to depart Manchester United, the club he joined from Linfield aged his mid-teens? "This turned out relatively straightforward, because I reached the point where I understood I couldn't establish myself at the top level. I'm hugely grateful for the experience gained but it reached a stage where I thought I required a fresh start, drop down the leagues and play professional soccer. Now I'm steadily climbing the ladder."

Welsh Adaptation

It is the early part of the afternoon at the team's practice facility but Galbraith has a commitment at 5pm: a road rules assessment, another move in the direction of getting on the road. Until recently to his new neighborhood, the mid-twenties player was a regular in Swansea's dubbed team minibus, a minibus driven by academy staff, the transport team, which ferries players to and from training and matches.

"It's myself the Portuguese player, the Brazilian, the midfielder – the Swedish defender used to be in it but has started driving. It's pleasant to socialize with the guys but I'm planning to be the following person to stop using the bus and on the road. The Portuguese player is known for his humor; he's constantly causing mischief."

Public Engagement

During his time at his former club, Galbraith would mix with supporters on the Tube after commuting at Brentwood. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
