Former world champion Kramnik Rejects Wrongdoing in Death of US Chess Star Naroditsky

The former world champion has broken his silence after the tragic passing of US chess star Daniel Naroditsky, describing the 29-year-old's demise as a tragedy while condemning critics for launching what he termed an "deeply cynical and unlawful targeted harassment" against him and his family.

Kramnik's Statement

The 50-year-old former world champion, who has faced broad criticism for accusing Naroditsky of online cheating without evidence, offered sympathies but denied any individual targeting.

"Despite the tensions, I was the only person in the chess community who, noticing on video Daniel's apparent health concerns a day before his death, openly urged for him to receive help," Kramnik declared. "The ensuing efforts, right after his passing, to explicitly connect this sorrowful incident to my name … violate every limit of fundamental human decency."

Kramnik said his earlier requests for examination of Naroditsky's digital games had been overlooked "despite a significant amount of evidence", and claimed he would submit documentation to "appropriate officials". He noted his lawyers were drafting civil and criminal suits over "false accusations" that have led to threats against him and his family.

Police Findings

The death of Naroditsky may have been the result of a drug overdose and is being examined as a potential self-harm case, based on a law enforcement document released Thursday. A report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department indicates Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and describes the case as a "Investigation into sudden death."

"Last Sunday, October 19 at approximately 07:11pm, officers responded to an assist medic call in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the document states. "When they reached the scene, an unconscious individual was found and later declared dead by a medical professional."

Chess World Response

Anger over Kramnik's behavior has shaken the chess world. Hikaru Nakamura described his actions "appalling", while reigning champion Magnus Carlsen labeled it "terrible". Indian grandmaster Sarin, who played Naroditsky in his last digital game, blamed Kramnik for "causing a death", saying his self-appointed pursuit against suspected cheaters was ineffective and "completely unacceptable".

Grandmaster's Impact

A Stanford-educated prodigy and ex-youth titleholder, Naroditsky gathered more than 800k fans on streaming platforms. Referred to as Danya, he was praised for his wit, insight and modesty, becoming a leading voice in chess's COVID-period surge. He was also among the globe's top competitors under shorter time controls, finishing ninth at last year's blitz world championship in New York.

Naroditsky repeatedly refuted the allegations but acknowledged the toll they had taken on his mental health. "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I begin performing strongly, people assume the worst," Naroditsky remarked in his last online broadcast.

Organizational Statements

The World Chess Federation announced recently it was "looking into" Kramnik's behavior. "The way Kramnik approaches it simply is unacceptable," Fide CEO Sutovsky stated. The federation plans to honor Naroditsky with a tribute prize.

Federation president Arkady Dvorkovich later confirmed that all of Kramnik's official remarks about Naroditsky, before and after his death, would be submitted to the federation's disciplinary body "for independent consideration".

"Human life and dignity are core principles universally upheld," Dvorkovich emphasized. "Our global chess family has long respected the accomplishments of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such status brings a responsibility to uphold the principles of fairness and respect."

Loved Ones' Wish

Naroditsky's family have expressed they wish he is remembered not for the confrontation he faced but for "the happiness and motivation he provided others every day". Carlsen called him "an asset to chess", while Hikaru Nakamura referred to him as "among the finest".
