EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
