The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Matteo's Surprising Presence
A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Uncovering His True Position
It's possible the coach was persistently working to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
